Why a Periodontal Specialist?

Dr. Lavin is a true expert, applying the best standards to his patients every day.

Practicing periodontics and placing dental implants takes extensive, specialized training outside of dental school. Dr. Lavin knew right away he had the personality to excel in one area of dentistry rather than attempt to be great in all aspects of dentistry. After graduating from dental school at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Lavin continued his education to specialize in periodontics and implants.

Now, Dr. Lavin performs this specialty every day, fixing problems with periodontal health. You and Dr. Lavin work together to figure out why you’re experiencing the problem at hand and discussing what can be done to solve that problem.

What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Dr. Lavin is a board-certified periodontist in Sioux Falls who can tailor your treatment to your needs.

He specializes in preventing and stopping periodontal disease from worsening. Periodontal disease gradually destroys the support of your natural teeth. Seeing a periodontist is crucial when your gum health is at risk because studies have proven it can have a detrimental impact on your overall health. If you don’t take care of your gums, you can be at risk of serious conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Respiratory disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • And so much more

When should you see a periodontist?

Your general dentist may recommend you see a periodontist when he or she finds signs of periodontal disease during your checkups. However, a referral is not necessary to be seen at our office.

If you’re noticing any of these symptoms, we advise you visit our Sioux Falls office:

  • Bleeding gums while brushing or eating normal foods
  • Bad breath even after you brush your teeth
  • Loose teeth or gum recession
  • Any related health concerns, such as heart disease and diabetes
  • Abnormal changes with your mouth, such as red patches, sores, and difficulty chewing or swallowing (signs of oral cancer)
